Anime is a style of art form Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children. It has a very interesting art style and that's what makes it so popular. It was started in the 20th century in 1910 by Oten Shimokawa, Junichi Koch, and Kitayama who are considered the fathers of anime. Anime clubs gave rise to anime conventions in the 1990's with the "anime boom", a period marked by increased popularity of anime. These conventions are dedicated to anime and manga and include elements like cosplay contests and industry talk panels. Manga is a comic style of anime and was very popular in Japan and made its way to the U.S. in 1990 as well. I love Anime and I read Manga. Some of my favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, and Attack on Titan. There are also Anime movies that I love which include Ponyo, Howls Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. |

My Great Grandparents, Great Aunt, and My Grandpa all came from Lithuania to America aboard a ship called the General Hershey in 1949. They came through Ellis Island. They left Lithuania during the Soviet occupation during World War ll. They where the first ones in there family to leave in fact my 11 of Great Grandpa's siblings stayed in Lithuania. When they came through Germany to get to the boat my Grandpa was born. This didn't stop them from going they knew this was there only chance to leave so the bundled up my Grandpa and got on the ship. My Great Aunt who was 3 at the time remembers her Mom waking her up at the crack of dawn to see the Statue of Liberty as they approached Ellis Island. This impacted my life because if they had not been brave enough to leave or had chosen to stay after my Grandpa was born I would not have the same life as I do now who know how thing could have turned out. Its strange to think that people I have never met before have had a huge impact on my life I am very grateful of my Great Grandparents for risking everything to come here.
What do you remember about coming to the U.S.?
(asked to my Great Aunt Sylvia) I remember my mother waking me up at the crack of dawn and dragging me onto the boats deck to see the Statue Of Liberty. In the olden day's, like 1300's, did any of our ancestors get to be king or queens? (asked to my mother) Yes, You are related to the Duke and Duchies of Lithuania but it was way after the 1300's more like the 1900's. How hard was it to come to America and who was the first to come here? (My Grandpa) It was hard because I had 11 other siblings who didn't come over and we knew we wouldn't see them again for a while. How do you think where I live now affects my personality? (My dad) It nice that you live close to all of my relatives and its great that you are able to talk to all of them and I think it makes you more convenient. How has migrating to the U.S. affected your traditions and lifestyle over the years? (My great Aunt Audrey) We try to keep our traditions they same as when we where in Lithuania but over the years we have allowed new more American foods into our Traditional meals. Like for a Cristmas meal we now have a corse of how fish into our meal instead of all cold fish (History the study of past events like moving or a family member passing away)
My Great Grandparents (on my Mom's side) and my Great Aunt Sylvia came from Lithuanian in 1949 during the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. My Great Aunt was only 3 when they traveled through Germany. My Grandpa was born in Germany a few days after they arrived there. A few day's after my Grandpa Vytautas was born they got on a boat called the "General Hersey" and came to America, they arrived at Ellis island after 3 weeks on the boat. My Great Aunt Silvia remembers being woken up at the crack of dawn to go on the deck and see the Statue Of Liberty when they first arrived. My Grandpa was too little to remember this but his Mother told him all about it when he got older. My Great Uncle Valentinas (Val for short) also came over in 1950 he was 9 when he got here. My Grandpa's family moved to Chicago shortly after coming to the U.S. for work. My Great Uncle Val also came to Chicago with his family. When my Great Aunt Sylvia got older she Married my Great Uncle Val. My Grandpa met my Grandma when they where in there Senior year of high school, they eventually got married and they had my Aunt Dana and my mom Linea. When my mom was one my Grandpa and Grandma divorced. My Grandpa remarried and moved to Idaho. My Grandma stayed in Chicago and got remarried and had my p Aunt Fawn. My Grandpa also had two children, my Aunt Vilija and Uncle Rimas. My mom lived with her mom, step-father and sisters in Evergreen Park, Illinois. My Dad's side of the family is form Holland and Amsterdam. My Grandma is not sure who was the first to come over but we think it was my Great great Uncle Seeb who came over sometime in the late 1930's. My dad's family was originally form Kansas where Seeb had a farm but sadly lost everything during the great depression he moved to Alsip, Illinois where he started another farm. He grew asparagus and other vegetables. His farm stayed in business and he lived there until he died. My Grandpa's father came with Seeb and built a house only a few miles away from Seeb's farm. My Grandpa Fred Herman was one of 11 kids 6 sisters and 5 brothers. I was able to visit my Great-great grandparents home in Alsip and was quite shocked at how small the rooms were, especially with 13 people under one roof! My dad's parents lived a few miles apart. They met and got married and had my Uncle Fred and my dad Mike. My Dad lived in Alsip in a house my Grandparents built. My dad lived in Alsip until he married my mom. My parents met when my mom got a job at Evergreen Bank. She met my Grandma Brouwer who was also working there at the time. My Grandma set them up on a blind date. Mom to my Dad fell in love and where married on September 16, 1995. They moved to the Lisle, Illinois. A few years later I was born. I was born at Central Dupage Hospital, in Winfield, Illinois. My family moved to Woodridge, Illinois in 2003. My brother Michael was born 2 years later. I'm glad we moved Woodridge because we are still close to most of my relatives. I am also glad to live here because this is where I have met all my friends. I'm very grateful that my Great Grandparents left Lithuania and came here, even though it was hard they didn't give up this is very inspirational because they where the only ones in their family to leave and it was a huge change for them but they still didn't give up. I'm also thankful that my Great Great uncle Seeb didn't give up even though he lost everything this inspires me to look to the future and think no matter how hard life get's nothing is impossible. |
