(History the study of past events like moving or a family member passing away)
My Great Grandparents (on my Mom's side) and my Great Aunt Sylvia came from Lithuanian in 1949 during the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. My Great Aunt was only 3 when they traveled through Germany. My Grandpa was born in Germany a few days after they arrived there. A few day's after my Grandpa Vytautas was born they got on a boat called the "General Hersey" and came to America, they arrived at Ellis island after 3 weeks on the boat. My Great Aunt Silvia remembers being woken up at the crack of dawn to go on the deck and see the Statue Of Liberty when they first arrived. My Grandpa was too little to remember this but his Mother told him all about it when he got older. My Great Uncle Valentinas (Val for short) also came over in 1950 he was 9 when he got here. My Grandpa's family moved to Chicago shortly after coming to the U.S. for work. My Great Uncle Val also came to Chicago with his family. When my Great Aunt Sylvia got older she Married my Great Uncle Val.
My Grandpa met my Grandma when they where in there Senior year of high school, they eventually got married and they had my Aunt Dana and my mom Linea. When my mom was one my Grandpa and Grandma divorced. My Grandpa remarried and moved to Idaho. My Grandma stayed in Chicago and got remarried and had my p Aunt Fawn. My Grandpa also had two children, my Aunt Vilija and Uncle Rimas. My mom lived with her mom, step-father and sisters in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
My Dad's side of the family is form Holland and Amsterdam. My Grandma is not sure who was the first to come over but we think it was my Great great Uncle Seeb who came over sometime in the late 1930's.
My dad's family was originally form Kansas where Seeb had a farm but sadly lost everything during the great depression he moved to Alsip, Illinois where he started another farm. He grew asparagus and other vegetables. His farm stayed in business and he lived there until he died. My Grandpa's father came with Seeb and built a house only a few miles away from Seeb's farm. My Grandpa Fred Herman was one of 11 kids 6 sisters and 5 brothers. I was able to visit my Great-great grandparents home in Alsip and was quite shocked at how small the rooms were, especially with 13 people under one roof!
My dad's parents lived a few miles apart. They met and got married and had my Uncle Fred and my dad Mike. My Dad lived in Alsip in a house my Grandparents built. My dad lived in Alsip until he married my mom.
My parents met when my mom got a job at Evergreen Bank. She met my Grandma Brouwer who was also working there at the time. My Grandma set them up on a blind date. Mom to my Dad fell in love and where married on September 16, 1995. They moved to the Lisle, Illinois. A few years later I was born. I was born at Central Dupage Hospital, in Winfield, Illinois.
My family moved to Woodridge, Illinois in 2003. My brother Michael was born 2 years later.
I'm glad we moved Woodridge because we are still close to most of my relatives. I am also glad to live here because this is where I have met all my friends.
I'm very grateful that my Great Grandparents left Lithuania and came here, even though it was hard they didn't give up this is very inspirational because they where the only ones in their family to leave and it was a huge change for them but they still didn't give up. I'm also thankful that my Great Great uncle Seeb didn't give up even though he lost everything this inspires me to look to the future and think no matter how hard life get's nothing is impossible.
