My Grandma on my moms side, who I call "lola" because that's Tagalog for "grandma" came to Canada when my mom was four years old. She came for better jobs and better opportunities for her kids. There is a large Filipino population in Canada so she wasn't very worried about losing traditions. While she was in Canada, they didn't start out with a lot of money but she didn't really have a problem getting a job because she spoke English very well. She got a job in the Canadian government, teaching her kids that if you work hard anything is possible. My mom wanted to be a nurse since she was a kid so she moved to Texas and went to a nursing school where she met my dad who was in the Air Force. Around that time my lolo died. Although that was heartbreaking for my entire family, my mom and lola continue to tell my siblings and me to work hard for him because he's a major reason we're here. Now we still have traditional Filipino foods at least once or twice a month, we're learning to speak Tagalog more frequently, and we work hard because my lolo, lola, and my parents worked hard for me to be here.
